6th Grade/ Timeline!

A timeline is a way of displaying a list of events in chronological order. It is typically a graphic design showing a long bar labeled with dates alongside itself and (usually) events labeled on points where they would have happened. Often times, they include pictures to visually represent the event. In class, students have been creating a timeline of at least 10 events in their life. They must be uniquely designed with color and drawings. If students are not finished in class, they will be due back by Friday, September, 19, 2014.

8th Grade/ How did we get here?

Kennewick Man was discovered by accident in July 1996 on the banks of the Columbia River near Kennewick, Washington. Archeologists who first studied the skeleton, assumed that it was the remains of an early pioneer. However, further analysis revealed characteristics of not only European, but also Asian. A stone projectile point lodged in the pelvic bone is that of a type usually identified as from 9,000 to 4,500 years old has suggested that non-Indian peoples may have been among the first settlers here. This has led us to the question: How did we get here? In teams, you will continue to research your assigned theory (Clovis-first, by boat, or crossing the Atlantic ice) of migration in class in order to make an evidence based argument to your peers. This analysis will set the stage as we investigate the geography of the early America’s, and the establishment of early American civilizations.

7th Grade/ Transportation!

Transportation is an issue faced by all explorers, whether settling out on a family vacation or traveling to a new world for the first time. The shape of the vehicle must serve the purpose of the trip and be large enough to carry both the explorers and their supplies. Vessel design, including the shape and size of a vehicle, is important. In class, we will work to analyze the components of vessel design, navigation, and propulsion in order to evaluate how they affect exploration. We will utilize the tools of both early explorers to Jamestown, as well as modern tools used today.
