8th Grade/ Latin America Geography

The America’s are two continents connected by a narrow bridge called an isthmus, however, their geographies and climates are very different. Mountains run along the western parts of both continents, and both have rivers that flow down these mountain ranges. Each continent then has unique physical features. However, each continent has a very unique climate that in turn affects the season and living conditions in each of these areas. In class, students will work together to complete a mapping lab experience that will require them to examine several maps of Latin America in order to identify physical features and conditions that could influence human settlement in this part of the world. They will then discuss advantages and disadvantages of each region identified. Next, students will design homes that reflect Latin America environments they have identified in the mapping lab in order to identify how geography influences the development of culture in this part of the world.
